Q: How often should you beat your handicap?

A: Not often. In fact, you should average about three shots higher than your handicap. For example, if you have a course handicap of 16, and the Course Rating is 71.2, you should average 90, not 87. The USGA Handicap System is based on 96 percent of the best 10 differentials (corrected for Course and Slope ratings) of your last 20 rounds. More than half of your scores should be within three strokes of three over your handicap (87 to 93 in this example). Most golfers beat their handicap (86 or better in this example) only 20 percent of the time and beat it by three strokes one out of every 20 rounds. For a person with a course handicap of 16 to break 80 (beat his handicap by eight strokes), the odds are 1,138 to 1. To do it twice, it would take the average golfer more than 700 years. In other words, it ain't happening.

Country Club of Lansing Instruction

The Country Club of Lansing is one of the few facilities in the area with the ability to have year round instruction and practice. During the off season, two hitting bays in the basement with dual camera video analysis using V1 swing software, a Vector launch monitor and Butch Harmon’s endorsed “Explainar” offer members the opportunity to stay sharp. Once the driving range is open, you will enjoy over 30,000 square feet of turf to hit off and instruction available at your convenience. Custom club fitting with Titleist, Nike and Callaway is also available year round. The staff offers a variety of lesson options, from individual, to group, clinic and season long packages, depending on your needs.

PGA Director of Golf, John Lindert with 28 years experience heads our staff of top-quality instructors. Included in John’s accolades are 2 former PGA Tour players and over 15 collegiate players including the youngest player to receive the Arnold Palmer Scholarship to Wake Forest University.

PGA Head Professional, Jon Pilcher with 9 years experience is also building quite a reputation with one of the country's top PGA Professionals and two former CCL Club Champions under his guidance.

Assistant Professionals, Tim Reum and Joe Winkler, have turned The Country Club of Lansing’s Junior Golf program into one of the strongest in the area.

Combined, the Professional Staff gave over 300 golf lessons during the 2007 golf season, which were distributed between beginners through advanced, young to old and right or left handed. Let our instructors help your game regardless of where you are in your golf career.
